I'm currently reading his book Musicophilia, but so far it hasn't addressed anything along these lines. The answer no doubt affects popular taste in other areas as well. What made feathered haircuts fashionable in the 1980's? Why were bell bottoms acceptable in the 1970's? These things did not seem dated at the time.
