Thank you for this. I left SUNY Purchase after 2 years for all of these reasons. I changed my career goals and applied to NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing program a few months ago, got accepted, then turned them down. I thought things would be different at a different school, but they're not.

I have a lot to say on this matter, but you've said it all for me. Feldman would I proud of this post, I think.

Hear here on the musescore! Sure, there are things it can't do, but do you really need such things?

Another that appears to have fallen from the grace of the programming sea is one called Rosegarden; it lacked some very essential features (such as alternate endings!) but the brilliant thing it did was to create Lilypond output to typeset the scores it could produce into wonderfully professional-looking documents.

Even if they won't endorse Musescore, I think bands and schools would do well to endorse the MusicXML as the standard of music score interchange. So many collections and courses provide their samples in .SIB or .MUS files that are even useless to the owners of the other product! If we can agree on one format, one open standard format, as with every other industry on the planet, we will spark a great renaissance in information sharing and the consequent cross-fertilization of musical ideas.

"Pragmatic notation" - I like it! It seems better to capture the reality that historically, most music notation has, necessarily, been indicative rather than fully prescriptive. To my mind, the gap between what's notated and what's performed is where the real music happens.

It seems like this same mapping of uptown vs downtown, mainframe vs minicomputer dichotomy extends today to LOrk vs Laptop Band. On the one hand, you have everybody with entirely matching computers, parts and programs and other hand, a more DIY aesthetic. I can't help feeling that everybody with identical setups is sort of an Apple-ification of creativity, where "creativity" means buying an app and using it in the scripted way.

I do feel this has massive political impact in terms of how we engage consumer capitalism and corporate control.

Also, I wish you had written this 10 months ago, so I could have quoted it in my PhD thesis!

Lovely description of what it means to get into the zone of playing in a gamelan! Panerus was my first love and I found it really very strange to have to 'slow down' to the barung. As a raw undergraduate, I remember intellectualising the whole process, working it out on paper, before playing rather stiltedly. It was only when I returned to it that I realised that I could 'feel' it rather than 'think' it. The theorising could still be done, but it was subservient to my ability to play musically.

I have never understood why composition in the 20th century was so hesitant to take what the kids today might call a cinematic approach to all these formalities.

If the mood I want is Bach, then why not some crux-less pretty counterpoint, aid if the mood I want is the mid-century nihilism, why not Velvet Underground? These are just other tones, other colours, and the fact they are culturally charged makes them no less musically useful. In fact, I would argue that music is bound inextricably with human beings, as Dale Purves finds a very-nearly diatonic scale in the statistical densities of formant tones in all human speech regardless of culture, so there again, tonality and a-tonality, growing closer or farther from the groundspace of those formant tone scales, is that not just more of what George Russell was saying in his Lydian Chromatic methods? Greater and lesser degrees of gravity, greater or lesser degrees of Comfort Zone.

Continuity, which is to not just Mahler and Mozart but to ragas and tribal chants, just different moods, different times and scenes in the cinematics, no?

Dear Unknown, thank you for your kinds words about my Uncle. I would love to hear the piece you wrote and dedicated to him. I also have a lot of unreleased music of his as well as all the movies he was working on over the last few years. I just received 6, 1 terabyte hard drives filled with music, movies and other stuff.
