A displaced Californian composer writes about music made for the long while & the world around that music. ~ The avant-garde is flexibility of mind. — John Cage ~ ...composition is only a very small thing, taken as a part of music as a whole, and it really shouldn't be separated from music making in general. — Douglas Leedy ~ My God, what has sound got to do with music! — Charles Ives

Parade Music
The inaugural parade is the first American parade I've seen in years, a real change from Fasching/Fastnacht parades here; I don't need the military marches, but the civilian Sousa marches and the contributions of more contemporary material by school and community ensembles have been fun. The online CNN coverage of the parade is totally chopped up which makes for some — unintended — Ivesian possibilities in the mixture and movement. Miking moving wind ensembles is tricky, but it would have been swell if they'd invested a bit more in sound quality.
