Just asking.

A displaced Californian composer writes about music made for the long while & the world around that music. "...giving it the test of time." — Ruggles "...'alive in the present." — Varèse "Menschen wie wir sollten nie Concessionen machen!" — Mahler, letter to Strauss 1894 "My God, what has sound got to do with music!" — Ives

This would be an interesting question for someone like Oliver Sacks. I'm currently reading his book Musicophilia, but so far it hasn't addressed anything along these lines. The answer no doubt affects popular taste in other areas as well. What made feathered haircuts fashionable in the 1980's? Why were bell bottoms acceptable in the 1970's? These things did not seem dated at the time. Whatever it is tends to be cyclical, as clothing and music trends often come back into fashion, sometimes decades later.
